Privacy policy

What we collect, why, and how to make us stop. Written to be read rather than skimmed past.

Effective [EFFECTIVE DATE - set on publish]

Owner action before launch

This policy has to describe what the site actually does. Fill every placeholder with the tools you genuinely install, delete any section describing something you do not do, and have it reviewed by a lawyer if you operate at scale or handle EU or California resident data in volume. A privacy policy that describes the wrong tools is worse than none.

Who we are

This site is Small Biz Primer, at smallbizprimer.com, operated by [LEGAL ENTITY NAME] of [REGISTERED ADDRESS]. For questions about this policy or about your data, write to privacy@smallbizprimer.com.

The short version

  • You can read this entire site without giving us your name or email.
  • We use analytics to see which pages are useful. That involves cookies or similar technology.
  • If you email us or submit a form, we keep what you sent so we can reply.
  • We do not sell your personal information.

What we collect

Information you give us

If you use a contact or pitch form, or email us, we receive your name, email address and whatever you write. We keep it for as long as we need it to deal with your message and for a reasonable period after, then delete it.

Information collected automatically

Like almost every website, our server and our analytics record technical information when you visit: IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, how you arrived, and roughly where in the world you are. We use this in aggregate to understand what is worth writing more of.

Analytics provider: [ANALYTICS TOOL - e.g. Google Analytics 4, Plausible, Fathom. Name the one you actually install.]

Cookies and similar technology

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We may use them for:

  • Essential functions - keeping the site working and secure.
  • Analytics - counting visits and understanding which pages help.
  • Affiliate tracking - when you click a partner link, that partner may set a cookie so that a later signup is credited to us. That cookie is set by them, under their policy.
  • Advertising - [IF YOU RUN DISPLAY ADS, NAME THE NETWORK AND WHAT IT SETS. IF YOU DO NOT RUN ADS, DELETE THIS LINE.]

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking analytics and advertising cookies will not stop you reading anything here.

Affiliate links and third parties

This site contains affiliate links, explained in full in our affiliate disclosure. When you click one, you leave our site and the destination company's own privacy policy applies to what happens next. We do not receive your personal details from them - only, in most cases, an anonymous notification that a referral converted.

We also rely on service providers who process data on our behalf, which may include our web host, our analytics provider, our email provider and our form handler. They only process what they need to provide the service.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
  • We do not ask for financial account details, and you should never send them to us.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to object to certain processing, and to receive a copy. Residents of California have specific rights under the CCPA and CPRA, including the right to know and the right to delete; residents of the EU and UK have rights under the GDPR.

To exercise any of these, email privacy@smallbizprimer.com. We will respond within [RESPONSE WINDOW - 30 days is the usual commitment]. We may need to verify who you are before acting on a request.

Security and retention

We take reasonable technical measures to protect the limited data we hold, and we keep it only as long as we have a reason to. No website can promise perfect security, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the effective date at the top. Material changes will be noted on this page rather than made quietly.
